Exwold Backs Alice House Hospice as National Funding Crisis Deepens

Exwold Technology, has pledged its continued support to Alice House Hospice at a time when the UK’s hospice sector is facing a severe financial "cliff edge."

The announcement marks over a decade of partnership between the two organizations. The relationship began more than ten years ago when Exwold’s management asked staff to nominate a local charity to support, with Alice House emerging as the clear favourite. Since then, the company has become one of the Hospice’s longest-standing business supporters.

This corporate backing comes as local care services face mounting pressure. National data from Hospice UK shows that three-quarters of hospices in England are currently running at a deficit. While the need for end-of-life care is expected to grow, many providers are struggling to maintain service levels due to rising costs and limited statutory funding.

The situation is mirrored locally in Hartlepool. It currently costs £3.7m each year to run the specialist services provided by Alice House. With only 34% of that total coming from Government funding, the Hospice is left with a shortfall of over £6,500 that must be raised every single day to keep its doors open.

Exwold Technology has helped meet this challenge by sponsoring major local events, including the Annual Hootenanny Beer Festival and the Colour Run at Seaton Carew. They also support the annual Charity Golf Day and provide Christmas gifts for residents who are unable to be with their families during the holidays.

The real-world impact of this support is reflected in the experiences of local families who rely on the Hospice. One family described the care their loved one received as "exemplary" and of the "highest possible standard." Another family thanked the staff for their "kindness, respect, and love," calling the team "truly angels." One patient shared that the "thoughtful and brilliant" staff provided the support they needed to return home happy and pain-free.

Greg Hildreth, Business & Communications Senior Manager at Alice House Hospice, said the partnership with Exwold plays a vital role in sustaining care for the community. He noted that “this partnership makes a huge difference to local

families accessing our services, and we value the warmth and engagement from all at Exwold - we look forward to continuing this relationship long into the future.”

Exwold Technology has confirmed its support will continue throughout 2026, working alongside the team at Alice House to help protect the essential care they provide to the people of Hartlepool, Tees Valley, and East Durham.
